What to Serve With Gyros: 20 Yummy Sides

    May 8, 2023 by Emily A. Leave a Comment

    Jump to Recipe Pin Recipe

    Who doesn’t love gyros?

This amazing Greek dish always hits the spot. Plus, you can adapt it so easily to suit any tastes or restrictions!

That makes it the perfect choice for any meal, whether you’re just making a weekday dinner or having guests over. If you really want to make it a party, why not add some side dishes?

If you’re wondering what to serve with gyros, I’ve got you covered. In this article, you’ll learn excellent pairings — both authentic Greek favorites, and fresh modern plates — that will make your gyros meal a hit!

These gyros sides will take your meal to the next level and cater to everyone’s unique preferences. Excited to spice up your gyros party? Let’s dig in!

    1. Smooth Tzatziki Sauce

I had to put tzatziki sauce at the top of this list because it’s undeniably the most classic pairing out there. In fact, it’s sometimes even called gyros sauce!

This Greek dip combines cucumber, garlic, olive oil, vinegar, and yogurt, creating an iconic tangy and creamy flavor.

The cool freshness of the sauce complements the heavy, meaty flavors in gyros so well! And the best part? This sauce is ready in as little as 10 minutes!

For the best sauce, use rich, high-quality Greek yogurt, plenty of garlic, and some salt and pepper.

It’s also important to squeeze the excess water out of your cucumber before adding it. If you don’t, the water thins out the sauce – resulting in a mixture that doesn’t combine well.

I sometimes even enjoy tzatziki sauce as a starter with pita bread or chips if I’m in the mood for something light!

    2. Greek Salad

Don’t worry, this salad isn’t just some boring lettuce bowl.

In fact, it doesn’t even have a leafy green base! Instead, you’ll enjoy the freshness of delicious veggies paired with indulgent salty and crumbly feta.

Traditionally, Greek salad uses cucumber, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, red onion, olives, and mint, combined with a mustard and garlic vinaigrette.

This bright, summery salad pairs amazingly with gyros and is a super healthy treat in its own right!

Greek salad is also quick and simple to make. Simply chop up the vegetables and prepare the dressing, and voila — you’ll have a tasty salad in just 15 minutes!

    3. Greek Fries

Not feeling a salad, but still wondering what goes best with gyros? I get it! Pairing your gyros with some hand-cut, Greek-style fries are sure to hit the spot.

To make it even easier for you, these fries don’t require a deep fryer. Oven-baked fries aren’t just similar in taste and texture, but they’re also healthier, cheaper, and require a lot less cleanup.

For best results, use large russet potatoes for long, skinny fries with the perfect amount of crunch!

Topping these fries with oregano, salt, pepper, fresh parsley, and crumbled feta gives them that authentic Greek flair.

These crispy delights are a great side to gyros on their own. You can also add tzatziki or whipped feta dipping sauce if you’re feeling especially fancy.

    4. Crispy Spanakopita

Spanakopita is another iconic Greek dish, and it’s fantastic as a gyros side!

This crispy creation is filo pastry dough filled with spinach, onion, egg, and feta. It’s another excellent way to get your veggies in since the spinach cooks way down, so you’re pretty much eating a salad (covered in delicious buttery filo, of course).

When paired with gyros, make sure to prepare your ingredients beforehand. This dish can take at least an hour and a half to prepare and serve!

    5. Greek Lemon Rice Pilaf

Looking for another carb-based option? This light and bright lemon rice pilaf is such a satisfying and flavorful side dish to go for!

Greek lemon rice pilaf is one of my absolute favorites because it’s just so quick and easy.

It comes together in under half an hour, and most of that time you don’t even need to do anything other than stir once in a while! Plus, it only uses one pot and a few ingredients, making it very convenient to prepare.

To make Greek lemon rice pilaf, all you need to do is melt some butter in a pan, add rice, turmeric, lemon juice, salt, and chicken (or vegetable) broth, and cook like normal rice.

You’ll then get an amazing, yellow-colored side dish that goes perfectly with (or even in) gyros!

    6. Sumac Onions

If you’re looking for a smaller side dish that comes together quickly but still packs a crazy flavor punch, try these sumac onions!

This dish is Turkish, but if sumac onions go with doner kebab, they’re guaranteed to pair well with gyros too.

Sumac onions are made through quick pickling, so you don’t need to remember to prepare them days in advance or have a massive jar taking up half your fridge.

Simply combine thinly sliced red onion with lemon juice, parsley, olive oil, ground sumac, and salt, and marinate it for five minutes before serving. How easy!

    7. Greek Oven Roasted Potatoes

These potatoes are insanely crispy and coated in a Greek seasoning blend that’s simply to die for!

Roast potatoes are a classic option as a side dish for a reason — they’re perfect as they are, and everyone enjoys them.

To get the ultimate crunchy outside and soft, starchy inside, make sure to soak your potatoes for at least half an hour (and give them a good rinse) before serving. Starting with a preheated baking tray also really helps.

Pop these potatoes into the oven and bake for 40 minutes to achieve that roasted appearance and explosion of flavors. Then, enjoy this either on its own or as a gyros side!

    8. Skordalia

If you prefer your potatoes mashed, why not give Skordalia a go? Although technically a dip, you can serve this Greek dish hot as a gyros side too.

Skordalia is made using potatoes, a lot of garlic, citrus, olive, and nuts (almonds and walnuts are great choices).

The result is a much more complex mashed potato dish that’s also a lot lighter due to its use of olive oil instead of butter or other dairy products.

And it’s also a quick dip to make — in just around 25 minutes, you’ll have a hearty pairing to your main dish!

    9. Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

Any hummus will likely go well with gyros, but roasted red pepper is one of my go-to's! It’s such a quick and easy dish to make as well, giving you a decadent serving in no time.

All you need to do is blend together chickpeas, roasted red peppers (from a jar is fine), tahini, aquafaba or water, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and salt in a mixer or food processor. That’s it!

Serve the hummus as a dipping sauce with your gyros or spread it inside the pita as you’re preparing it for the ultimate taste sensation.

    10. Grilled Zucchini Greek Salad

This twist on Greek salad uses seared zucchini. Hands down, it’s the perfect light and bright side to pair with your gyros!

For this salad, mix your dressing of olive oil and vinaigrette with olives, tomatoes, red onions, and black pepper. Of course, zucchini grilled to perfection makes this recipe shine!

    11. Marinated Olives

Looking for something simple you can just pop in your mouth, two at a time?

You can never go wrong with olives — especially marinated ones! For this dish, make sure to use Kalamata olives to keep things authentically Greek.

Marinating your own olives is a great way to turn this snack into a more complex and flavorful side.

To prepare this recipe, use lemon zest, garlic, and a mix of herbs and spices to take your olives to the next level. You can also lightly fry the olives before serving them warm to really unlock those flavors.

Make sure to try this dish next time you’re serving gyros because you’re only 30 minutes away from a truly iconic side!

    12. Homemade Potato Chips

True, you could always just open a bag of chips – but homemade ones always taste better (and are better for your health, too!).

When making homemade potato chips, you’ll be surprised at just how easy they are to make, as they only need three core ingredients — russet potatoes, oil, and salt.

If you love to mix things up, try adding your favorite herbs or spices for a fancier dish! I find thyme, black pepper, and garlic really enhance the flavor and make for an excellent side dish for gyros.

Another advantage is that homemade chips won’t soak up your time, either. Spend about 30 minutes and you’ll have a freshly cooked heap of crunchy chips!

    13. Hot Honey Roasted Brussels Sprouts

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Brussels sprouts when I was younger. Now, I’m mad I went so long without them!

All of the little layers mean you can pack these little veggies full of mouthwatering flavors.

Hot honey roasted is one of the amazing ways to get brussel sprouts to shine, and it's super easy to prepare as well!

All you need to do is combine halved Brussels sprouts with hot honey, olive oil, salt, and pepper, then bake them for 15 to 20 minutes.

Add some Greek goodness by topping the dish with feta cheese and chives, and you’ve found the perfect pairing for your gyros!

    14. Fried Feta With Honey

You can also enjoy feta and honey without the Brussels sprouts if you want! This recipe coats chunks of feta in eggs, flour, and sesame seeds, then shallowly fries them before drizzling with honey.

The resulting combo of the gooey, salty feta, crispy nutty sesame, and sweet sticky honey sauce is simply out of this world.

Preparing this dish isn’t intensive either as you’ll only need to spare about 10 minutes for a hearty serving that’ll blow you away and elevate your gyros!

    15. Tabbouleh Salad

Traditional tabbouleh salad also goes excellently with gyros.

For this recipe, you’ll need to soak bulgur wheat, and then combine it with onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and parsley before tossing in lemon juice, olive oil, and spices.

It’s fresh and flavorful and makes for such an ideal light side to a heavier dish like meaty and savory gyros.

If that’s not enough, tabbouleh salad is also time-efficient as it only takes half an hour to prepare enough for 10 servings!

    16. Tomato Soup With Feta and Basil

If you’re after something to warm you up, you can’t go wrong with this Greek-inspired tomato soup!

It’s very easy to prepare as it relies on a classic tomato soup base of blended roast vegetables, broth, and spices.

Finishing it off with feta cheese (don’t be afraid to indulge) and some fresh basil completes the Mediterranean flavor profile and creates a delicate soup that’s still full of character.

Serve tomato soup as a side with gyros, or even as a main with some fresh pita or crusty bread!

    17. Gigantes Plaki (Greek Baked Beans)

Another comforting and hearty option is the classic Gigantes plaki!

The combination of flavorful roast veggies, creamy beans, and salty crumbled feta is the epitome of satisfying food.

This recipe uses butter beans, but cannellini or another white bean will do just as well in a pinch.

If you have a big appetite, Gigantes plaki’s combo of veggies, cheese, and extra protein is the complete package and a perfect match for gyros. For a perfect vegetarian option, you can serve the beans as pita filling too!

    18. Shirazi Salad

This Persian salad is a great choice if you have any food restrictions — it’s vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and super healthy! It’s also just plain delicious.

So easy to make, Shirazi salad only requires you to chop your veggies (cucumber, onion, and tomatoes), then combine them with herbs and spices, lime juice, and a little olive oil – and you’re ready to go!

As a plus, it only takes around 15 minutes to prepare this delectable dish.

This salad is super light, fresh, and tangy, which makes it a great accompaniment to gyros. If you want to make it a little heartier, try adding couscous or feta!

    19. Dolmadakia (Stuffed Grape Leaves)

No list of amazing Greek side dishes would be complete without dolmadakia!

These iconic grape leaves stuffed with herb and vegetable rice are the ultimate Mediterranean finger food.

Serve this as a side with your gyros or as an appetizer while the meat is cooking. I’d personally recommend serving it with yogurt sauce to get your dip on as it helps to uplift the dish’s entire flavor profile!

    20. Mixed Vegetable Medley Bake

Everyone loves a veggie medley (or call it “briam”, if you want to keep it Greek) – especially one that you can be creative with.

For this medley bake, you can choose any of your favorite veggies as long as you’re keeping the ideal pairings in mind.

Generally, this recipe uses potato, sweet potato, zucchini, eggplant, tomato, and onion, as well as garlic, herbs, and spices. Once you’ve done your chopping, this dish is pretty much done!

Afterward, layer up your veggies and pop them in the oven for a slow roast. This nutrient-packed, utterly delicious vegetable medley pairs flawlessly with a hearty feed like gyros!

    Drinks

What do Greeks drink with gyros? Some common Greek drinks enjoyed alongside gyros include:

    • Ouzo - This anise-flavored aperitif is a popular Greek liquor that is often served as an apéritif. Its slight sweetness contrasts nicely with gyros.
    • Beer - Greek brands like Mythos, Alfa, and Fix are crisp lagers that help cut through the richness of gyros.
    • Wine - Greeks often enjoy gyros with affordable Greek table wines, especially reds made from Greek grapes like Agiorgitiko or Xinomavro.
    • Tsipouro - Another popular Greek liquor, tsipouro is a strong distilled spirit that can be served straight or on the rocks as an accompaniment to flavorful gyros.
    • Soft drinks - Greeks commonly drink sodas like the orange-flavored Fanta or the lemon-lime Sprite as a refreshing pairing.
    • Water - Since gyros can be salty from toppings like feta and tzatziki, Greeks often wash them down with plenty of water to rehydrate.

    F.A.Q

Yes. Gyros is traditionally served on a pita bread.

Do Gyros Use Naan or Pita?
