Lebanese yogurt sauce, Mint yogurt dip

Growing up in a Lebanese family, there was hardly a Lebanese feast without different types of yogurt dip. Lebanese yogurt is called "Labneh." Labneh is a thick, strained yogurt used as a garnish for many Lebanese recipes and is a staple part of Lebanese cuisine. Sometimes plane Labneh is served with grilled meats, like this chicken shawarma recipe, and vegetables. Another options is to add other spices or high quality olive oil to it and served as a dip for Pita Bread or Za'atar Bread, or as an oil free dressing for salads or Arabic dip for veggies.

    Origins

Where is mint yogurt sauce from?

Yogurt and mint are a staple part of Middle Eastern food and the Mediterranean diet. It is also very common in Eastern and Asian countries as well, including India. Mint and yogurt sauce is very common in Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and other countries in the Middle East.

    What is mint yogurt sauce?

Mint yogurt sauce is a classic Mediterranean yogurt made with thick plain yogurt, fresh mint leaves (or dried mint), garlic and salt. This minted yogurt dip is a classic Middle Eastern addition to the mezze platter.

What does mint yoghurt sauce taste like?

Lebanese mint yogurt sauce is cool and refreshing. It is creamy and has the perfect blend of mint and garlic flavors.

    Is it healthy?

There are many benefits to mint and yogurt. Yogurt is full of gut healthy probiotics which may enhance the immune system. Yogurt is a good source of calcium and protein. The health benefits of mint are many. Mint is supposed to help with digestive and stomach ailments, and may even help brain function.

All in all, Lebanese yogurt with mint can be extremely beneficial for health.

    🥘 Ingredients

The ingredients for yogurt mint sauce are:

    • Plain whole milk yogurt (or Labneh if you prefer it to be thicker)
    • minced garlic
    • Fresh mint leaves or dried mint
    • salt

What kind of yogurt should I use?

Whole milk is preferable for this yogurt sauce with mint, however Lebanese Labneh will work just fine if you don't mind it being quite a bit thicker. Can you use Greek yogurt? Yes, but my preference is plain whole milk yogurt.

    🔪 Instructions

How to make mint and yogurt sauce:

In a medium sized mixing bowl, take ½ of a cup of plain whole milk yogurt and mix in 1 tablespoon of dried mint (or ¼ cup chopped fresh mint), garlic and salt.

If you desire it to be thicker, more of a spread or Lebanese dip, then use Lebanese Labneh.
