    Main Dishes

    1. Sweet and Sour Chicken

Sweet and sour chicken is a Chinese takeout classic, so it makes sense that this is the first item on our list of dishes to serve with egg rolls!

As the name suggests, this dish is both sweet and sour.

This combination of flavors leaves my mouth hungry for something crispy and savory every single time, without fail — perhaps an egg roll?

    2. Sesame Chicken

This garlic, soy, and sesame delight is tender, lightly crispy, and delicious all in one hit!

Basically, it ticks nearly all of the boxes — but the dish can do with just a bit more crunch. That’s where the egg rolls come in!

When they’re combined, you’ll have yourself an amazing high-protein meal containing chicken, egg, and a medley of vegetables contained within the egg rolls.

It’s a treat you’ll find yourself coming back to again and again!

    3. Fried Rice

Nothing hits the spot quite like some proper fried rice, and what’s even better is that it’s another excellent companion to egg rolls!

This recipe is vegetarian and showcases peas, carrots, onions, and garlic for the veggie component. For protein, the recipe calls for two large eggs.

Fry with sesame oil and season with cilantro and soy sauce for that classic fried rice taste that we all know and adore!

    4. Lo Mein

This dish is tasty, nutritious, and takes only 20 minutes to complete from start to finish!

Bell peppers, snow peas, carrots, mushrooms, and scallions are the main ingredients that make this dish what it is.

Hoisin sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger are used to create the delightful aroma that the noodles and vegetables are cooked in.

However, sometimes when I have a bowl of steaming lo mein, I do feel like something’s missing. That usually resolves itself quickly when I get my hands on an egg roll or two!

    5. Broccoli Beef

This saucy stir-fry is packed with protein and is immensely savory. I gave it a try, and was converted immediately!

This recipe requires only one skillet pan, which means less time cooking and cleaning and more spent on relishing the tasty food.

Garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil give this dish its punchy flavor notes. These are ingredients commonly used in egg rolls too, allowing the two dishes to tie together beautifully!

    6. Kung Pao Shrimp

You’ve heard of Kung Pao chicken, but have you tried Kung Pao shrimp?

If not, this recipe is a must for your next dinner party. Of course, it’s best served next to some crispy egg rolls!

This recipe takes only 45 minutes to prepare and uses relatively easy-to-find ingredients.

But there’s one secret, key ingredient you might not have stocked in your pantry: Sichuan pepper. This Chinese spice has a unique flavor that can’t easily be replaced!

This shrimp and egg combo provides a delightful contrast of textures that jive excellently on the tongue. It’s hard not to love!

    7. Hot and Sour Soup

Hot and sour soup is a traditional Chinese recipe that’s so ideal for those chilly winter nights. The base is a broth — either chicken or vegetable — and the rest is kind of up to you!

If you like, you can choose to make this dish vegetarian by using tofu for your protein. If not, try using beef (or any other meat of your choice).

A key component of this dish is the fine ribbons of egg that float effortlessly throughout the soup. These are created through the technique of whisking eggs quickly through the hot broth.

You’ll also need shiitake mushrooms — an essential ingredient that becomes tender and packed with flavor throughout the cooking process.

Egg rolls are truly one of the best things you can dip into Hot and Sour Soup. Hot tip: The longer you leave them in there, the tastier they become!

    8. Chow Mein

This recipe is for chicken Chow Mein — but really, you can use whatever protein you like! For a vegetarian alternative, try crispy fried tofu instead.

Chow Mein is a straightforward dish you can dish out in roughly 20 minutes. One thing you can do in advance to speed up the process is to marinate the chicken in the mixture — this will give you significantly better-tasting meat!

Both this dish and egg rolls contain noodles, but if you’re carb-crazy like me that definitely won’t be an issue!

Besides, this recipe contains Chow Mein noodles, while egg rolls contain the much finer vermicelli noodles typically made from mung beans. Dig in!

    9. Vegetable Stir Fry

When I’m looking for a quick, easy, and super nutritious dish to serve with egg rolls, vegetable stir-fry is definitely high up on my list!

Simply slice all of the vegetables listed in the ingredients into pieces of a similar size. Then, throw them in a hot pan with soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and sesame seeds.

Cook on high heat until all ingredients are cooked through, but make sure that the veggies still have their crunch.

Once that’s done, serve it up! Yep — that’s all there is to it.

    10. Sushi

Sushi is a Japanese dish that’s a favorite for many across the globe. It’s healthy and served cold, making it ideal for hotter times throughout the year!

Sushi and egg rolls are a match made in heaven. They are both eaten by the piece, so dinner guests can grab them as they please.

They also complement each other beautifully with their opposite attributes; hot and cold, greasy and fresh, crispy and soft.

Making sushi can be a laborious process. However, I like to think of it as a time to relax, unwind, and focus on the task at hand.

It also helps because guests never fail to appreciate all the effort that’s gone into the meal!

    11. Kake Udon

Another Japanese classic, Kake Udon is a super simple yet incredibly delicious soup that will bring you joy on the coldest of winter days.

Dashi broth, udon noodles, Wakame seaweed, white onions, and vegetables of your choice are all that’s required for this dish. You can also add chili as you please!

And with some crunchy egg rolls on the side?

You wouldn’t be able to talk to me because I’ll be so focused on savoring each bite!

    Sauces

No egg roll is complete without a delicious dipping sauce!

The sauce really takes the egg roll to the next level, adding extra flavor and moisture. So what sauce goes with egg rolls? I've tried just about every combo out there, and let me tell you - there are a lot of fantastic options!

In this section, I'll share the best sauces to serve with egg rolls. I'll go through all the classics like sweet and sour, hot mustard, and soy sauce. I'll also suggest some outside-the-box ideas you may not have considered before.

    Ranch dressing with egg rolls?

    Oh yes!

I'll explain why each sauce makes a great pairing and how to make or buy the best versions.

Egg rolls deserve an amazing sauce, so I've done the dip testing so you don't have to. Follow my suggestions and you'll have the perfect saucy complement to your crispy egg rolls every time.

    1. Sweet and Sour Sauce

If you've ever wondered what sauce goes with egg rolls, look no further!

This tangy, fruity sauce is a classic for a reason. Inject a burst of authentic Chinese flavor into your meals with this quick, easy, minimal recipe ready in under 10 minutes.

With simple ingredients like sugar, vinegar, ginger, garlic, ketchup and pineapple juice, you end up with a sauce that's tangy and sweet, bringing your egg rolls to life.

Making this sauce is as simple as tossing all the ingredients into a saucepan. Simmer until it thickens slightly, usually around 4-5 minutes. That's it! Pour it in a bowl and it's ready for those crispy egg rolls.

What makes this recipe stand out is the delicate balance of sweet and sour - a nod to Chinese cuisine. And it's flexible no matter your diet or tastes. You can adjust the tanginess and spice, and even add pineapple chunks for an unusual tropical twist.

I love the bright punch of pineapple juice and vinegar mixed with the salty-savory soy sauce.

    2. Soy Glaze

If you're wondering what sauce is good with egg rolls, you can't go wrong with the simple, salty-umami taste of soy.

I like lightly dipping the corner of the egg roll and letting the soy sauce enhance but not overpower the filling. It's quick, straightforward and requires only five minutes.

Making this sauce is a breeze - first, pour all the ingredients into a pot. Let it boil for about five minutes, keeping a close eye to ensure it doesn't burn. The sauce thickens as it reduces and even more as it cools, achieving a honey-like consistency.

This versatile sauce can also work its magic on your ribs, wings, seafood, chicken, and pork.

    3. Hoisin Sauce

This thick, fragrant sauce has an unbeatable savory-sweet flavor that Chinese food lovers will recognize. It contains soybeans, garlic, chilies and spices like five-spice powder.

I like to thin it out with a splash of rice vinegar for a glossy dipping sauce. The hint of acid perks it up. And it clings nicely to egg rolls, coating them with that signature hoisin taste.

Most Hoisin sauces you find in stores tend to be overly sweet. With this homemade version, you get a better balance: less sweetness, more savory, garlicky and nuttiness!

With egg rolls, hoisin sauce provides a rich quality to these greasy treats — resulting in a wonderful chorus of flavors that I find quite addicting!

You can also use it as a marinade, stir-fry sauce, even a spread for sandwiches! No matter what you use it with, Hoisin will instantly become your go-to condiment. Irresistible!

    4. Toum Sauce

Lebanese sauces also play well with egg rolls! One of them is toum, a traditional garlic sauce similar to aioli that’s made from oil, lemon juice, salt, and garlic.

This recipe is incredibly simple and easy to make at home. It’s also an excitingly delicious sauce for dipping your egg rolls into — though unlike the other sauces on this list, it does little to balance the greasiness.

While it contains lemon juice, it has a high oil content that overpowers the acidic component of the sauce!

    5. Teriyaki Sauce

This is a classic Japanese sauce that’s made from soy, sake, sugar, and mirin.

Teriyaki has a sharp and salty flavor at first, but you’ll also find that it’s pleasantly sweet!

Teriyaki is a very common dipping sauce for snacks such as egg rolls. If you're wondering what sauce to eat with egg rolls, Teriyaki is a fantastic choice. That’s because its acidity often creates the perfect harmony with the greasiness of fried food!

    6. Plum Sauce

This sauce is so deliciously sticky and sweet! With its deep purple color and mild fruity tartness, it reminds me of jam. The unique flavor is a blend of sweet and tart tastes, with traditional Chinese spices mixed in. Well-loved in China, this versatile sauce will make your egg rolls explode with more flavor.

The prep is simple and quick. First place all the ingredients except the spice mix in a pot and bring to a boil. After reducing the heat, let it simmer for about 30 minutes. Then make a smooth puree in the blender. Toast the whole spices in a dry pan until fragrant. Combine those with the puree back in the pot and simmer again until it reaches the perfect thick consistency.

You'll love dunking crispy egg rolls in the thick, gloopy plum sauce - it gives a sweet hit in every bite!

    7. Spicy Mustard

Still wondering what sauce is good with egg rolls? This sinus-clearing mustard with horseradish is how I like to add some kick to my egg rolls.

For the best flavor, let the mustard sit at room temp for up to 8 hours before refrigerating it. It mellows over time, so plan to make it a few days before your egg roll feast.

If it turns out too spicy, you can balance the flavor by adding some honey or coconut crystals.

This recipe is versatile for. You can soak the seeds for a milder mustard, or use white wine, beer or apple cider instead of water for a different taste. Maybe even add some fresh dill or garlic for extra flavor layers.

Your homemade mustard is ready in under 10 minutes. Not only will it elevate your egg rolls, it'll work wonders with sandwiches and salad dressings too.

    8. Ranch Sauce

My guilty pleasure dip! Creamy, cool ranch is how I give my egg rolls a tasty American twist. The hit of garlic, tangy creaminess, and herbs is so addictive with the crunchy egg roll. It's an unexpected combo that really hits the spot.

You can whip up this dressing in no time. All you need is a blender or food processor to combine all the ingredients. One cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream, half cup mayonnaise, half cup milk, three tablespoons of fresh chives or one tablespoon dried chives. Add two tablespoons of fresh dill or two teaspoons dried dill weed, one tablespoon fresh parsley or one teaspoon dried parsley and don't forget a vital addition - a pinch of smoked paprika.

Blend these until pureed and combined, and voila! You have a versatile, creamy, and slightly smoky ranch dressing ready in less than 20 minutes that will amp up your egg rolls and make them heavenly.

This ain't your average store-bought ranch; it's homemade, simple, fresh, and brims with flavor.

    9. Duck Sauce

This sweet and sour orange-flavored sauce is subtler than plum sauce. The mild fruity taste reminds me of orange marmalade. I love how it complements my egg rolls without overpowering it. The sticky texture also makes it perfect for dipping.

You can make this sauce in under 5 minutes. Simply mix all your ingredients, pass the mixture through a strainer for smoothness, and voila, your sauce is ready!

If you particularly enjoy your sauces with a bit of texture, omit the straining step.

    10. Chili Garlic Sauce

I love the fiery kick this sauce adds to egg rolls! It's made with chili peppers, so it has some serious heat. But it's also packed with pungent garlic flavor and a good amount of vinegar. The acidity helps cut through the rich fried exterior of the egg roll.

This sauce is a Filipino-Chinese blend, filled with bird's eye chilies and garlic that make it uniquely aromatic. Mix the chilies and garlic in a food processor until finely minced, then carefully cook them in heated neutral oil, while stirring in salt and sugar. Mix in some Chinese 5-spice powder, dried bay leaf, star anise, and some Szechuan peppercorns for extra depth of flavor.

Not only is it ideal for egg rolls, but it also enhances noodles, stir-fries, or as a dipping sauce. Once you try this Chili Garlic Sauce, you won't want your egg rolls served any other way!

    11. Peanut Sauce

This sauce transports me to Thailand with its nutty, mildly spicy taste and it's incredibly quick to prepare, taking only approximately five minutes!

To start, you’ll need peanut butter (preferably one that contains only peanuts and salt), a low-sodium soy sauce or similar like tamari or coconut aminos, sweetener like maple syrup or honey, rice vinegar, lime juice, red pepper flakes, warm water, optional toasted sesame oil, and minced garlic.

To make it, mince the garlic finely and add it to a large mixing bowl. Then add all ingredients aside from the water and whisk until you achieve a smooth texture. Then, pour in the water slowly, adjusting for your desired consistency. You'll want it thicker for dipping your egg rolls.

The crunch of peanuts on top is the perfect finishing touch. It's a more filling dipping sauce that complements egg rolls wonderfully.

    12. Ponzu

I'm a huge fan of Japanese Ponzu sauce with egg rolls. It has the perfect balance of salty, sour, and umami.

Making your Ponzu sauce is straightforward. First, gather these 6 ingredients: soy sauce, dashi stock, mirin, rice vinegar, lemon juice, and lime juice. Pour all into a bowl and mix well. Taste test and adjust the ingredients until you're satisfied with the flavor. Adding an extra dash of citrus juice just before serving adds to that tangy pleasure. This quick recipe is ready in 2 minutes, with no cooking required.

Ponzu is probably my favorite lighter dipping sauce for egg rolls. Any unused sauce can be stored in an airtight container or glass jar for about a week.

    2. Easy Crunchy Asian Slaw

What goes well with egg rolls? Why, something just as crunchy, of course — like this Asian slaw!

This recipe is great for a few reasons. For one, it’s wonderfully nutritious and contains only raw ingredients.

Two, it’s naturally vegan. And three — as you might’ve guessed, it’s the best salad to serve with egg rolls!

It’s this slaw’s freshness and innate healthy character that balances out the greasiness of egg rolls so perfectly. This pair makes for one delightful meal — trust me!

    3. Garlic Green Beans

Garlic green beans are another great green side to serve up next to egg rolls. They are wholesome and a particular favorite among kids (if you skip the chili, that is).

Alongside egg rolls, they’re the perfect veggie for picky children!

This recipe couldn’t be any simpler and takes all of 20 minutes to prepare. One secret to its excellent flavor is its use of peanut oil. This infuses the bean with an irresistible nutty taste that you just wouldn’t get if you use other types of oil!

    4. Refreshing Cucumber Yogurt Salad

After chowing down on some greasy egg rolls, there’s really nothing quite like a cucumber and yogurt salad to cleanse the palate.

Stepping away for a moment from our Asian-fusion inspiration, this Lebanese classic undoubtedly deserves a spot on your table.

This recipe is healthy, fresh, and very simple to prepare. All you’ll need is garlic, dried mint, cucumber, red onion, and some whole milk yogurt to fulfill this winning combo!

    5. Thai Noodle Salad

Resembling a festival of colors and tastes, this Thai noodle salad is simply to die for!

It has everything you want in a salad — all manner of tropical fruit and shredded vegetables — but what really sets it apart is its use of rice noodles and crushed peanuts.

Crunchy veggies and chewy noodles? This dish is practically begging for a side of egg rolls!

As it turns out, these two are natural companions as the egg rolls add a bit of greasy goodness to the mix. Yum!
