Wontons are such an amazing meal, side, or snack! I think my favorite filling has got to be the traditional pork and shrimp, but tofu, green onion, bok choy, and water chestnut is a really close second.
While I usually don’t say that meals need to be served with anything else, I would be disappointed if I was served wontons without a dipping sauce! However, there are also many fantastic sides that make wontons really shine.
That’s why for this list, I’ve gathered all of my go to dipping sauces but also included:
- Soups
- Salads
- Vegetables
- Rice
- Dessert

1. Spicy Chili Oil
Of course the classic pairing with wontons is a simple, amazing, and hot chili oil!
While it’s easy to buy at your local supermarket or Asian grocery, it’s just as simple to make at home. Plus it’s cheaper, you can make it in bulk, and it lasts at least three months in the fridge (if not indefinitely).
Spicy chili oil is straightforward to make and only takes about fifteen minutes in total!
Just add chili flakes, and any other flavorings or spices you want to a heatproof bowl and mix thoroughly. Then, heat a neutral oil in a small pot over medium high heat until hot (but not smoking) and pour it into the bowl.
Be careful not to burn yourself with the oil, as it will be very hot and will spit and sizzle when poured!
Mix well, pour into a glass container, and either serve hot or save. You can strain the oil if you like, though I generally prefer it chunky.
2. Ginger Soy Dipping Sauce
If you’re looking for a little less spice, this sauce is a great choice for when you want something a little more special than just soy sauce. It’s a thin, drippy sauce that’s salty, a little spicy, and very flavorful!
To prepare it, combine soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, and water in a pan, bring to a boil, and stir until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens ever so slightly.
Then, add scallion, ginger, oil, and hot red pepper flakes (to taste). Serve right away, or make ahead – this sauce will be fine for several days to a week in the fridge!
3. Sweet and Sour Sauce
My final go to wonton dipping sauce of course has to be sweet and sour. While this sauce is a little more authentic and intricate than the neon orange, Americanized Chinese sauce I grew up loving, it hits the same spot and admittedly tastes better!
This recipe also uses simple, easy to find ingredients, and comes together in just five minutes.
All you need to do is combine canned pineapple juice, light brown sugar, rice vinegar, ketchup, and soy sauce in a small saucepan, and bring to a boil.
Then, add in a cornstarch slurry, stir vigorously, and simmer for another minute or so until thickened!
4. Hot and Sour Soup
If you’re up for a recipe that’s a little more complex, this hot and sour soup is one of the best soups I’ve ever tried.
It’s a passed down, authentic family style recipe that creates an intricate, perfectly spiced soup with beautiful egg ribbons and tender, marinated pork!
In less than the time it takes to say "I should not text my ex," this soup will be ready to mingle with your wontons, transforming them into the power couple of your dinner table.
Hot, sour, quick, and easy – it’s not just an online dating profile, it’s your dinner! And hey, while food this good doesn't need jokes, let's just say this soup will never ghost you – it's too committed to your taste buds.
5. Sesame Noodle Salad
This chilled salad is delicious; it’s bright, zesty, fresh, and packed with nutrients and protein. It’s great on a warm day, or as a low maintenance side any time!
While there are quite a few ingredients, they all work to make this dish refreshing and diverse, and it’s still quick and easy to make.
Simply cook your noodles or angel hair pasta according to the packet instructions, drain and rinse until cool, and dress with sesame dressing.
Then, add in snap peas, edamame, shredded carrot, red pepper, cilantro, English cucumber, and green onion, toss and serve.
While there are sesame seeds in the dressing, I enjoy adding extra on top for garnish!
6. Stir-fried Vegetables
One of the most well-known Asian-style side dishes is veggie stir fry – and for good reason! It’s super healthy, delicious, crispy, and flavorful. Plus, this dish only uses one pan and less than half an hour from start to finish.
The gentle sweetness and savory depth of the sauce complement the rich, meaty filling of the wontons. Plus, you're getting your greens in—a win-win!
To make stir-fried vegetables, heat oil in a large wok or non-stick pan and add in sliced carrot, broccoli florets, baby corn spears, mushrooms, and peppers.
Stir fry until the vegetables are just tender (about three minutes), then add in butter, ginger, and garlic and cook until fragrant and combined.
In a separate bowl, prepare a simple sauce of chicken broth, soy sauce, corn starch, honey, and hot sauce (to taste), then add it over the vegetables and cook until thick. Serve piping hot and enjoy!
7. Congee
Congee is the ultimate comfort food! It’s a velvety, warm, savory porridge made from rice, that’s amazing on a cold day, or when you just need some extra love.
This recipe is pretty simple, and easy to follow even if you’ve never made congee before.
Basically, you add a cup of rice to eight cups of boiling water and cook it until your grains are soft, fluffy, and breaking apart – using a whisk to help break down the rice if necessary.
Then, add in marinated chicken, simple seasonings like chicken bullion and salt, and garnish with green onion and cilantro.
8. Refreshing Cucumber Yogurt Salad
On the opposite end of the spectrum, this salad is cooling, refreshing, and tangy! I love it as a side with any meal, as it’s one of my favorites and also a great palette cleanser.
It also couldn’t be easier to make!
Simply combine a sliced and peeled cucumber with a diced quarter of red onion, a third cup of plain yogurt, mint, salt, and garlic powder, and stir to combine. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
9. Asian Coleslaw
Another bright and refreshing side that adds some color and crunch is this Asian Coleslaw!
The main ingredients are pretty simple, just shredded cabbage, cilantro, and scallions, but the decadent and flavorful dressing makes the veggies shine, and the slaw complements many dishes.
The beauty of this dish is its versatility. Whether you've got a thing for purple cabbage or you're a fan of the classic green, this slaw is your canvas. Add in the refreshing cilantro and scallions, then dress it all up with a homemade Asian Slaw Dressing.
This salad compliments the savory richness of wontons with its own refreshing crunch and zing. Plus, you're getting those extra cruciferous veggies in. It's yet another win-win!
10. Bok Choy with Oyster Sauce
Bok choy is an amazing vegetable for soaking up flavors, as sauces and seasonings stick well to the multilayered leaves, giving you a burst of yumminess with each bite.
This recipe is no exception: it pairs quick-boiled bok choy with a savory and sweet oyster sauce.
You even can choose the consistency you’d like for your sauce, as there’s a cornstarch slurry option for those who like a thicker, stickier sauce.
Serving bok choy with oyster sauce alongside wontons is a game-changer. It adds a nutritious green to your plate and offers a saucy contrast that makes every bite of your main dish even better.
11. Fried Rice
When you want a side dish that’s familiar, loaded with veggies, and super satisfying, fried rice is a great pick.
This recipe keeps things classic with a copycat takeout recipe that tastes even better made fresh at home! It’s also a great use for leftover white rice.
You can whip up your own fried rice in under twenty minutes! Simply scramble eggs in a pan with butter, then put aside and add in more butter, diced carrots, and onion.
Saute until soft (three to four minutes), then add in frozen peas and cold-cooked white rice.
Once the peas have thawed and heated and the rice has started to brown slightly, add the eggs back in and season with oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Heat back up and serve immediately!
12. Egg Drop Soup
Another amazing egg-based side dish to have with wontons is of course egg drop soup! It’s comforting, protein-packed, and really tasty.
Plu, this recipe only takes around five minutes and a handful of common ingredients, so it’s a great last-minute addition.
To make egg drop soup, bring chicken or vegetable broth to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and season with salt, white pepper, and sesame oil to taste.
Slowly pour in a cornstarch slurry while stirring, then do the same with beaten eggs, ensuring the broth is barely simmering. Then garnish with green onion, serve, and enjoy!
13. Pickled Vegetables
If you want to spice up any of your favorite vegetables, try your hand at quick pickles! These tangy, sour, and seasoned veggies make the perfect side, and show that you went the extra mile to prepare a thoughtful meal.
The beauty of this recipe is its versatility.
Feeling the heat? Dial down those jalapeños, seed them out if you don’t want to breathe fire.
Want to jazz it up? Throw in peppercorns, mustard seeds, and, why not, some playful herbs or spices like dill or turmeric.
The rich, savory flavor of the meaty wonton hugs the vibrant, zesty crunch of the pickle, creating a culinary yin and yang on your plate.
14. Szechuan Green Beans
You won’t believe how much flavor is packed into these green beans! They’re crunchy, juicy, spicy, salty, a little sweet, and all-around amazing.
They are quick and easy to make as well! Heat oil in a medium skillet, then add green beans and stir fry until they begin to blister.
Following that, add in green onions, garlic, and chili-garlic paste, followed by soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, ginger, water, and chili paste.
Cook for another couple minutes until the sauce is fully combined and thickened, then garnish with sesame seeds and enjoy!
15. Mango Pudding
If you’re looking for a dessert option, this mango pudding is one of my go-to’s!
It’s rich, silky, juicy, and sweet, plus it only takes about ten minutes to put together – perfect when you’re whipping up a last-minute treat.
All you need to do is dissolve gelatin in boiled water, whisk in salt and sugar, then stir in coconut milk (or cream) and mango puree, and put in the fridge to set. It’s great with a fresh mango or shredded coconut garnish if you can!
