2 Ways to Brew Coffee: Pour Over & French Press

    December 21, 2015 by Emily A. Leave a Comment

Let's talk about two of my favorite ways to make coffee: pour over and French press.

I've been brewing coffee at home for years, and these methods always give me a great cup to start my day.

If you're tired of your regular drip coffee maker or just want to try something new, you're in the right place. Pour over and French press methods are simple, don't need fancy machines, and let you control how your coffee tastes.

In this guide, I'll walk you through both methods step by step. I'll tell you what you need, how to do it, and some tips I've learned along the way. Don't worry if you're new to this – these methods are easy to learn and fun to master.

    So which should you choose?

It depends on your taste! Love dark, bold coffee? Go to the French press.

Prefer lighter, nuanced flavors? Pour-over's your friend.

Whichever you pick, fresh beans and good water are key. And don't forget a gooseneck kettle for precise pouring!

    Pour Over Method

    What you need:

    • Pour over dripper
    • Paper filter
    • Coffee grounds
    • Kettle
    • Mug or carafe

    Steps:

    1. Boil water and let it cool for about 30 seconds.
    2. Place the paper filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water. This removes any paper taste.
    3. Add your coffee grounds to the filter. I use about 2 tablespoons per cup.
    4. Place the dripper on your mug or carafe.
    5. Slowly pour a little hot water over the grounds to wet them. Wait 30 seconds. This is called the bloom.
    6. Pour the rest of the water in a circular motion. Go slow and steady.
    7. Wait for all the water to drip through. It should take about 3 minutes.
    8. Remove the dripper and enjoy your coffee!

    French Press Method

    What you need:

    • French press
    • Coffee grounds
    • Kettle
    • Spoon
    • Timer

    Steps:

    1. Boil water and let it cool for about 30 seconds.
    2. Add coarse coffee grounds to the French press. I use about 2 tablespoons per cup.
    3. Pour hot water over the grounds. Stir gently.
    4. Place the lid on top but don't push the plunger down yet.
    5. Wait 4 minutes. Set a timer so you don't forget.
    6. Slowly push the plunger down.
    7. Pour and enjoy your coffee right away.

    Tips for Both Methods:

    • Use freshly ground coffee for the best flavor.
    • Experiment with the amount of coffee and water to find your perfect strength.
    • Clean your equipment after each use to keep your coffee tasting great.

That's it! With these simple steps, you can make great coffee at home. Try both methods and see which one you like best.
