Instant Pot French Dip
Some evenings call for an easy and quick recipe that hits the spot. This easy French dip recipe is a great one to feed a family, and requires surprisingly few ingredients. If done in an Instant Pot, it's a quick way to get that perfect roast beef that falls apart and is fork tender. And if an Instant Pot isn't an option, it can always be prepared in a slow cooker for the same results.

And talk about family friendly! My kids LOVE this recipe and it goes a long way! This is also a great way to feed a crowd for a party, or even if you want something that will give you leftovers to pick on the rest of the week. It's also freezer friendly, so don't be shy to buy a big cut of beef!
After this French dip recipe is prepared, the beef comes out fork tender and it yields plenty of au jus sauce without any of the work. The best compliment to these French dip sandwiches? Horseradish mayo.
How to make Instant Pot French dip sandwiches
So let's get started! Start by getting out your Instant Pot. Don't have a pressure cooker? I highly recommend this Instant Pot. It's time to get one! I will give instructions on how to cook slow cooker French Dip Sandwiches below as well.
What cut of beef to use for French Dip Sandwiches?
I used about a 3.5 pound chuck roast for this recipe, you can use a sirloin tip roast or arm or rump roast. Whatever good roast you have for roast beef you can use it!
Slice the onions very thinly and put them in the bottom of your Instant Pot. Place your roast on top of the onions. If using an Instant Pot, I highly recommend cutting the roast into smaller portions (see pic below) in order for it to tenderize evenly. If using a crock pot, no need to make the roast into smaller pieces. Add the garlic, Worcestershire sauce, spices and beef broth over the top.
Close the lid on the Instant Pot and set the time for 90 minutes. Make sure the vent is sealed and start the instant pot.
How to make horseradish Mayo
Now on to the horseradish sauce. French dip sandwiches are not complete without it! All you need is your favorite mayonnaise and prepared horseradish. Mix a few tablespoons of the horseradish into the mayo and you have your horseradish aioli! If you like it to have more of a kick, feel free to add more horseradish.

French dip sandwiches require some good crusty bread. I usually buy Vienna bread and slice it thinner so my kids can bite into it easily. If you want thick slices, that's fine too, just make sure to put it in the oven for a few minutes so it gets nice and toasted.
Once the meat is done, shred it with a fork. There will be slices of cooked onions in the pot and plenty of homemade au jus sauce for dipping. Ladle some of the au jus gravy into individual bowls for serving. Layer the sandwiches with the horseradish aioli, cooked onions and shredded French dip beef onto the toasted bread.
Each sandwich should be served with au jus on the side for each individual. Some like to dip more than others. This Instant Pot French Dip recipes is absolutely delicious and family friendly! Enjoy!
Slow Cooker French Dip Recipe
Follow all of the steps above by placing the ingredients in a slow cooker. Set the slow cooker to high and let it cook for 10 hours. Shred and serve!
Can I freeze French dip?
Yes, the meat can easily be frozen and preserved for later. Whatever is leftover of the beef and au jus sauce, place in a freezer container or heavy duty freezer bag and freeze for up to 4 months in a deep freezer. Thaw in the fridge and reheat in a pot over medium heat to serve again.

These look amazing. I don't have an instant pot right now - just keep using my daughter's and daughter in law's (but hey - that's all okay). This is one to share for sure. Your recipes always look the best. Thanks.

Thank you so much Beth! You can also do this recipe in a slow cooker if you don't have an instant pot. Just put it in on low for 10 hours.
